Surf History

Malibu circa 1940's

Aggie Bane Quigg paving the way for women in the history of surfing. Photo above is an image of Aggie riding the girlfriend board designed and built by Joe Quigg in the mid 1940's. This was the error of the transition from heavy weight balsa boards to light weight foam and fiberglass boards. This image incapsulates the movement towards the high performance surfboards we know today.

During time spent with my grandfather in his old age I would listen to his memories where we discussed pivotal moments that changed the way of surfing. Surfing use to primarily be a mens sport until the women got ahold of these lightweight boards. When the men realized that women were surfing circles around them the guys just had to get their hands on these.

Joe Quigg was beloved for his love of water-sports and craftsmanship of sailboat, surfboard, canoe, fin design and more.

Today my grandmother and grandfather are a huge inspiration to me and I'm grateful for all that they taught me.

In loving memory of Joe and Aggie
